Netball with Miss Tuiā

On Friday afternoon, a group of 8 students were able to play netball with Miss Tuiā. It was our designated time to go outside for some P.E. We broke up into groups, and then Miss Tuiā explained the rules to us - where we were allowed to go, what we had to do to get points, and what we weren't allowed to do. We got to play for half an hour, and we really enjoyed it. Watch the hyperlapse of us having heaps of fun!

Our theme for Term 4 is "Tā tātou Kōrero Tā tātou Kōwhiringa - Our Voice Our Choice".

We will be focussing on understanding where we belong (family, religion, community, etc), our roles and responsibilities, and understanding the concept of "My Space, My Place". It is going to be a fun term of learning for us. It's all about identity and belonging so get ready for your learning!

Team 4 Dress-Up Day!

Today is the last day of Term 3, and eam 4 Teachers wanted to have a bit of fun with our classes. We challenged our children dress up as their favourite Superhero or Movie character. This challenge was given to see how creative our kids can be, especially because they couldn't just leave the house and buy a costume from the store. Some of our children asked their parents for help, or even their clothes. Some of them made their costumes out of different materials they found around the house. They even had to use household items in place of actual props!

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Room 678 for Level 3

With Mrs Lagitupu being part of Bubble School, Room 6, 7 and 8 have joined together to become Room 678! We love being 678 - we get to interact with the other teachers as well as children from across the classrooms in our space. Haven't our kids got beautiful smiles? Us teachers are so proud of the efforts our learners are putting into their work, and for turning up to our daily Google Meets. Keep up the great work Room 678!

Happy learning, and don't forget to leave positive comments on our blogs!

We're in Level 3!

Auckland is moving into Level 3! We have a few students that have been going into school for Bubble School, and our amazing Mrs Lagitupu went in as the Teacher. Even though we have moved levels, we are still learning online from home. We are aware of the rules for Level 3 and we are ensuring that we keep healthy and safe. This week, our teachers decided that our learning for this week is all about Te Whare Tapa Wha. By looking into this subject, we were able to look into our well-being - something we are making sure is well looked after.

Uike Lea Faka-Tonga: Tu'apulelulu

We have made it to day nima (five) of Uike Lea Faka-Tonga.

Today, we thought "why not find a subject that a lot of people recognise about Tonga?" 'Ikale Tahi and MMT is big in New Zealand, and our children are quite familiar with them. We also looked into the Tongan Sports Academy, which is where a lot of our famous Tongan players have been through. Check out some of the learning that we have done today!

Uike Lea Faka-Tonga: Pulelulu

Yes, we have dedicated the week to Uike Lea Faka-Tonga (Tongan Language Week). And what a gift that was! Our learners loved the different learning experiences they were introduced to, and were even able to make connections with their own cultures (those who weren't of Tongan descent).

It wasn't just a treat for our learners though, it was a treat to us teachers. We were able to have a look into a popular culture in our school, even though we weren't Tonga. It was a lot of fun being taught by our students. Especially today where we looked at Food in Tonga *mouth watering*. A few of our children were able to find some similarities between different Pasifika cultural food, some having different names, and some having additional ingredients. Take a look at our learning for today!

Making Breakfast with Room 6 - Pancakes!

Room 6 has been busy this week learning about the different food groups. On Monday, we learnt about Fruits and Vegetables. We had a deep dive into what makes them helpful, and even got to learn a bit about Vitamins and Minerals. On Tuesday, we learnt about Grains. We talked about where this food group started, and how it was made into the grain it is today e.g. how we get from the plant to bread/pasta. We spoke about how grains can make us full because of the fibre that it is. On Wednesday, we learnt about Milk and Dairy products. We looked into what the different dairy products were, where all of these products started from, and how they are made into the products that they are now. On Thursday, we learnt about the all important Protein. We spoke about what protein does for us, what different sources of protein there was, and what non-meat eaters substitute for their protein intake.

Miss Tuiā thought about making something in front of us that contained all of these food groups. What better food than Pancakes. We have flour (grains), eggs (protein), milk and butter (milk and dairy) and raspberries (fruit) on top. Yum!

Check out the video below to see the pancake process! We even had a special guest - Mr Vogt. Feel free to leave a positive comment below.

PE with Room 6 - Coordination

Auckland Sport was working hard with Point England just before we went into Lockdown. They were putting together fun sport workshops, encouraging all of our learners to participate. Since being in Lockdown, they have been sending us resources that we can complete. Room 6 is still trying to show "Healthy Me Healthy You" (ahaaaaa) so we thought that as a class, we can do it together.

Enjoy this video of Room 6 completing one of the Coordination activities together! Feel free to leave a positive comment too.

5 Facts: NZ Paralympic Team

This week we have been learning about the New Zealand Paralympic team. We were just in time for Paralympics! We had learnt so much about the Olympics, so our teachers thought - why not learn about Paralympics too?

Our teachers got some resources together - videos, an article, and even directed us to the New Zealand Paralympians website. From there, we learnt about why the Paralympians were made, and who some of the athletes were that represented New Zealand.

Check out the 5 Facts that Khalia, Raymon and Ciannah have made!

Back in Level 4 Lockdown!

Tuesday the 17th of August at 6pm, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that we would be going into Level 4 Lockdown at 11:59pm that night. That didn't give us much time to prepare at all! Some of our devices were still at school, and we had to start our Online Learning pretty much straight away.

Lucky Pt England has been through this before. It's almost like we're experts at this whole Online Learning thing.

We started our first day of Online Learning on Wednesday the 18th August. Pretty good turn out for so many having left their devices at school. But our whānau are so supportive of their children, and they have made ways for their children to meet online with us.

Happy Learning from Room 6 to the rest of New Zealand!

New Zealand Olympic Athletes

As a class, we looked at the different New Zealand Olympians. We wanted to know a bit more about our amazing Olympic team. In order to do this, they had to go on a deep dive research.

One task that I set out for them ws to do a Research Presentation about our New Zealand Olympic Athletes. Take a look at the Research Presentation that Naomi made.

Another task that I set out for my Literacy class this week was to write an interview between themselves and a New Zealand Olympic Athlete. Here is an Interview between New Zealand Olympic Medalist Valerie Adams and Point England student Temalisi.

Me: Hi Valerie Adams. My name is Temalisi, or you can call me Lisi, and I have been learning about you at school. So what we did was we got to pick a New Zealand Olympian and you were the first one to come to my head. Also I have a few questions to ask you. First of all, how does it feel to have won all three medals - a bronze, a silver, and a gold? .

Valerie Adams: Well it feels amazing. The most special one was the bronze though because I did it for my two kids and it feels so good. I feel like I'm the most amazing mum because I did it for my family and I think that family comes first and ya.

ME: I agree with you. I like doing things for my family too. Okay, next question. Is it hard to throw the hard rock ball as far as you can?

Valerie Adams: The shot put weighs 4kg for women and that is why I try to do my best to get fit so I can throw it. I have to do a lot of weight training so that I get used to how heavy the shot put can be. It is a professional sport, so I need to make sure that I am strong enough to be a sportsperson.

ME: I think I could try my best to do that because we have Athletics coming up in a few weeks. Also we are going to be having a mini Olympics next week on friday and i’m going to try and be fit like you so if we do shot put I can throw the ball so far that no one can get it. So, how do you feel competing for New Zealand?

Valerie Adams: Mhmm, okay, well it feels amazing playing for Aotearoa. It’s good to play for the place where I came from and grew up in. My Dad is from New Zealand, and my Mum is Tongan, so to be able to represent one of my cultures, it is a true blessing. It's actually wonderful.

ME: I’m Tongan too! I think that if I was in the Olympics and I got to represent Tonga, I would be just like you. So next question, how does it feel to be one of the most famous shot put throwers?

Valerie Adams: I don't know. I just feel like a normal woman but only sometimes like when I go shopping or out with my family, there will be that person that comes to me and goes “OMG!!” And I’ll take a picture with them without trying to be awkward. Hahahaha and ya.

ME: I think that is a good answer because I try my best to go for a run at least 12 time’s a week and 2 time’s a day, one at day light and one at night time but not too dark only when the sun is sitting. What do you eat to keep fit and what  do you do to grow your big muscles?

Valerie Adams: So umm what i do is that i make sure I eat a healthy diet and i go to the gym and lift weights. When it’s very heavy, it's better for me to keep practicing and ya. Thank you for asking me all of these questions. I hope you got to know me a little bit more.

Feel free to look at both Naomi and Temalisi's blog. Don't forget to leave positive comments!

Breakfast Club in Team 4

Our focus this term is 'Healthy Me Healthy You'. Team 4 decided that to help their journey to become more healthy, we would keep a Healthy Me Diary, where they write down their food intake and daily exercise. We noticed that a few of our students were leaving their breakfast column empty, and when we questioned them, they said it's because they either didn't have time or they didn't want breakfast. So the Team 4 teachers decided to have a breakfast club. By giving our students the option to have breakfast at school, they won't have to rush at home, and they will have a quick healthy breakfast.

Today we had our first day of Breakfast Club. We set up our station in Room 678 and welcomed students through to have breakfast. On the menu today was Weetbix. The children would tell the teacher how many weetbix they want, tip their own milk, and then find a seat around the classroom.

It was great to have some students come through and enjoy a sit-down breakfast with their friends. Cheers to a nutritious breakfast! To the rest of Team 4, come and enjoy some breakfast on a Monday and Thursday morning :)

Visit from Sekope Kepu

Today, during our Team 4 Assembly, we had a visitor come in and give an inspirational speech to our team. It was Sekope Kepu. Sekope Kepu is an international rugby player. He has played all over the world, starting his rugby career in New Zealand.

Sekope Kepu was born in Sydney, Australia, and came to Glen Innes, New Zealand with his parents. He was passionate about playing rugby, where he started playing for Tamaki Rugby Club when he was 6 years old. Sekope Kepu then started playing for Representative teams when he was age 12, where he trialled for the team at the Point England Reserve - right next to our school! He moved back over to Australia to really begin his rugby career, joining the Warratahs and even making the Australian national team, the Wallabies! Sekope has travelled around the world playing Rugby, starting off in Australia, then to France, London, and is now back in New Zealand, where he is playing for Counties Steelers.

He came to speak to us about his career, where he started off, where he went, and what he is doing now. He also spoke to us about his little family going with him. His children come to our school too, Faith-Rose, Israel and Isaiah. Last year they were caught in London during Covid19, home-schooled for a year, and made their way back to New Zealand, where they now attend Point England School.

Sekope Kepu spoke to us about how he followed his dream of playing rugby, but always made sure to put God first. He said if we were passionate about something go for it. Sekope Kepu also made sure to encourage us to continue our studies, and make sure that we keep up with our learning. As far as talent takes us, it is always important to make sure that we have our studies with us. He also said that talent only takes us so far, so we need to work hard.

A big thank you to Sekope Kepu for taking the time to come and speak with us! We appreciate that you have done this, and we are so proud that someone from Glen Innes has made it so far. It makes us think that we too can make it wherever we go!

Term 3: Healthy Me, Healthy You

Our theme for Term 3 is "Healthy Me Healthy You".

We will be focussing on the Olympics, and how to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is going to be a fun term of PE/Health. Tighten up your shoelaces and get ready for your learning!

Each week, we will see a different teacher in team 4 to get a bit of physical education in. We will also be filling out a weekly diary tracking our food intake and exercise.

Check out the video our teachers put together during the holidays for 'Healthy Me, Healthy You'.

Retell: Rona and the Moon

Rona and the Moon

Retold by Naomi (in Room 6 at PES).

Rona was a beautiful woman who lived with her husband and her children . Rona's husband loved her so much but sometimes her bad temper and her angry way of growling at him and their boys upset them all. One day Rona husband said to her “The Moon  is good for fishing tonight i’ll take the boys with me to the island across the bay the fish well be catch” he said to her aging “ we won’t be back in tell the morning ok so have a meal out for us”  They  load their nets lines hooks and baits in to a canoe and paddled away .The next day rona began to prepare the hangi (oven) to cook the meal in . First she cleared out the ashes embers and cooking stones from the pit dug into the ground that she would prepare the meal in . Then Rona built a fire for the food . as it began to grow dark and the heated cooking stones glowed red Rona could hear her family singing as they returned across the bay in their canoe she was about was about to place the food on the stones we she found out that her stuff had nothing she needed water to put on stones so the stones can cook the food because she knew her family was hungry she rand and got the water because she heard her family singing across the bay it was dark by the time she was near when she was near a path a full moon was shining you could clearly see the silver big moon  weirdly the moon and it was so dark and a Rona couldn’t see things that much she hurt her toe ad she cash in to a rock Rona was in so much pain and she was so angry  at the moon for hiding his light that she shouted at him pokokohua witch means boil you head this was a terrible curse and a great insult the moon heard rude words and came down from his place in the sky he took hold of of Rona and began to take her from the ground she hang on to a tree but the tree wasn’t strong so she went up with the the stuff in her hand and a tree in the other hand and as this day she is in the moon .

Magic Show

At 1:30pm Team 4 and Team 5 went to a magic show that happened last week on friday at school in the hall.  The magician did some funny magic tricks and everyone started to laugh.  It was fun. Emeline my friend, Emeline went up the stage and the magician did some tricks on Emeline and the whole crowd. When the magician was holding the wand it was straight but when Emeline was holding the wand it would just fall apart, everyone was laughing so hard that the magician kept doing funny tricks to Emeline. Willam went up the stage too, the magician put superhero clothes on and put some vitamin paper on the costume. Here are some vitamins that the magician said are vitamin B, vitamin A, vitamin B3, vitamin C and many more vitamins. The magician got a rubix cube and it was mixed up, but when he put it in the blox and shaked it, he pulled out the rubix cube and it was solved!

I really enjoyed how we learned about the 5 nutrients that are dairy, protein, grains, vegetables and fruits. My second favorite trick was when Emeline went up to the stage and she was doing magic tricks. My last favourite trick was when the rabbit came out of the cage.

Written by Swaimah (Room 6 Literacy)

On a rainy day at Pt England school, Team 4 and 5 were going to the hall to watch the Magic Show. The show began and everyone started to clap and shout. During the magic show I actually loved 3 of the things he did. I loved the part when he threw that white long string and it was coming towards us. I was a little bit scared but then it was funny. I loved the part when he put the bird in a bucket and he turned it into a fluffy cute rabbit, it’s name was called Lollipop. I loved when he put random colours in a circle skinny bucket. When he did that hand magic he pulled the top of the colour and the colours turned into a colourful long fat string. All the other things that were a part of the magic show were actually cool too. When I first saw Lollipop (the rabbit) I wanted to hold him tight like it was my pet I haven’t seen in years. Some of them were funny. I saw that the birds were looking at us while watching him do magic stuff. I really enjoyed the magic show and hoped he would come back to do more magic. Finally the magic show finished and a brave boy came to say a good thank you for coming.

Team 4 - Learning about the Earth

This term, Team 4 has been learning about Planet Earth. Each class rotated for 5 weeks, learning about different parts that make up the Earth. Miss Tuiā taught us about Planet Earth, Mrs Lagitupu taught us about the Atmosphere, Mr Hughes taught us about the Biosphere, Mrs Siō taught us about the Hydrosphere, and Miss Parrant taught us about the Geosphere. We had so much fun learning about the different parts that made up Earth, as well as getting to know our Team 4 teachers better.

Watch this movie that Room 6 made for PENN about our learning!

Retell: The Māori Creation Story

The Māori Creation Story

Retold by Kolotita (in Room 8 at PES)

In the beginning, Papatuanuku earth mother and the Ranginui sky father loved each other. In between them lived their children but their children lived in darkness.  They were squished between their parents and never saw light. The children were furious.  The children had a meeting to discuss the separation, but Tawhirimatea and Rongomatane disagreed, they wanted their parents to stay together. The time came, Tane did a handstand and started to push Rangi and Papa apart, then his brothers started to join in. They pushed their parents apart. Tane was charged with covering his mother with all the beautiful greenery, and bird life. Tane became known as Tanemahuta the god of the forest. Rangi started crying down because he wanted to see he love Papatuanuku. His tears would make lakes, rivers, and seas. Tawhirimatea was not happy that his brother Tane had separated his parents and he stayed with his father in the sky. He became the god of the winds and the storms and rain. He would blow down his fury. Through what Tane did it allowed light and life came into the world.

Illustrated by Swaimah (in Room 7 at PES) and Miss Tuiā (teacher of Room 6 at PES):
